REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD VR Shaft

Vanquish All Rivals
Graphite Design gave their newest shaft a bold name. VR which stands for “Vanquish all Rivals”.  I quickly found this means to get this shaft in your driver before your friends do. The new Tour AD VR shaft has all the technology we have come to expect from Graphite Design, while maintaining the feel we all love in a Tour AD. When I talk about technology, materials and application are the two words I use to help define what changes we find in the newest version of a product
2018 was a great year for Graphite Design Inc. and beginning its 30th year of business, 2019 looks to be even better. 2009 was the year the unmistakable Cream White and Orange stripes of the Tour AD DI shaft took the top spot in the Tour AD line-up, until last year. 2018 was a changing of the guard with the introduction of the Tour AD IZ model and building on success year after year, the future looks bright with the new Tour AD VR in 2019.

Materials
The NEW Graphite Design Tour AD VR utilizes TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology and 50 ton ultra-premium, high modulus, aerospace quality carbon fiber materials. These materials are very expensive and have performance values that are unmatched for strength and small molecule uses.

Application – How are the materials used?
Graphite Design has a proprietary way of incorporating the materials. The first application is MSI (Material Stiffness Integration), which layers the carbon fiber in differing angles. The second application is known as FTT (Fast Taper Technology), where the taper of the shaft increases or decreases. End result, both applications allow engineers to make more specific changes in bend profile for the shaft. The VR has a Firm+ butt section, Medium+ mid section and Firm tip section.

Designed and manufactured at the Graphite Design Japan factory headquarters, the new Tour AD VR wood shafts have the unmistakable Tour AD stripes in dark blue with white and silver accents. The VR line up also includes a large range of weights and flexes to fit every golfer. Starting at 46 grams and beefing up to 86 grams, this shaft is a club fitters dream. The best overall profile for my swing is a 6 Stiff

Performance
If you look back at my previous reviews on shaft performance, the numbers you see for my Gamer are fairly consistent. The data here is not a mistype. I had to keep hitting this shaft to make sure I wasn’t getting a false reading.  Why did the VR add ball speed? It goes back to the technology I mentioned earlier. “The Tour AD VR shaft also utilizes FTT -Fast Taper Technology, which incorporates a faster taper rate from the grip to the lower mid-section of the shaft, providing the overall feeling of greater club head control at impact and an increase in club head speed.” Mission Accomplished!
