REVIEW: Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedges

More Changes to the Evolution of the Mack Daddy Wedge
Should you keep your old wedges or get new ones? We often have to ask ourselves this question about all our clubs, but especially about wedges because they take such a beating and they are so critical to scoring. I’ve seen guys order a couple sets of the same wedges if they find something they are comfortable with. Rodger Cleveland is constantly looking to improve the Callaway line of Mack Daddy wedges. He is now on version 4. The big innovation is the groove-in-groove technology. This might not be the first wedge to ever use this milling, but they certainly did a great job with this new line. If you are thinking about a change, the 4th evolution of the Mack Daddy line looks and performs great.
When it comes to wedges, I really focus on head shape.  For me the way the wedge sit behind the ball is critical to hitting quality shots.  That usually has the most to do with the leading edge and hosel transition.  I like the wedge to sit low/flat on the ground and then I like a clean line from hosel to leading edge so that I know right where the club will attack the ball.  I really liked the improved straight transition of the Callaway MD4 wedges.

The Callaway MD4 wedges new “innovation” is the groove-in-groove technology.  It is essentially 84 extra micro-grooves between the main grooves to help with ball friction.  They are designed in two different ways for lower lofts and higher lofts.  I only played higher lofts and man do these boys spin.  They are high spin wedges that still allow for control and creativity.  I liked the stopping power of these wedges on crisp clean shots, and the ample spin when out of the thick stuff.  I found these have more spin than the MD3s I’d previous played.

Another new addition to the Callaway MD4 line is the X-grind.  It is even more extreme than the C grind.  I loved this new grind since it makes the wedge even more versatile for creative shots.  The other 3 grinds have been around for a while and offer different options for different swings and different turf conditions.  I tend to gravitate toward the more versatile grinds since I tend to play more feel than full swings with my wedges.

  • Spin: 10,343 rpms
  • Launch Angle: 54.9*
  • Dispersion: 2.6 yds
  • Club Head Speed: 76.9 mph
  • Ball Speed: 79.2 mph
  • Total Distance:  88.1 yds

The Callaway MD4 wedges come in multiple lofts, multiple grinds and 2 finishes.  The Chrome and Raw Black both looks amazing and are holding up really well to the hard AZ turf.  I could go with either finish, just depends on preference.  The many different choice should allow just about any golfer to dial in their needs and preferences with the newest evolution in the MD line.  I really like the new shape and new grind.  I think those two new features paired with the groove-in-groove tech make these wedges worth checking out.
