How do you feel about your iron game?  Irons tend to be one of the biggest investments we make in our bag and are the least changed club in the bag.  Many of the the other slots in the bag rotate more regularly than irons.  Sometimes it is cost, other times we don’t know what we’d even want in new irons.  Do we really need more distance?  Do we really need more forgiveness?  How honest are we with our iron play?  While they do account for a large portion of our score, many golfers tend to be less critical of their irons than their other clubs.  Testing irons can be time consuming and difficult to really pin down if new irons help our game or not.  Distance isn’t everything.  The “strokes gained” metrics really are the best way to figure out your irons.  If you want to take your irons to new heights and lower scores, the Callaway Apex Pro 21 irons might be just what you need.

At first glance the Callaway Apex Pro 21 Irons look like a simple players iron.  They have a compact almost “blade” like appearance.  They don’t appear to have many bells or whistles visible on the outside.  They don’t have screws or weights or fancy cuts.  The Apex Pro 21 irons look very classy and simple.  But don’t let these clean lines and simple looks deceive.  These irons are filled with technology and internal features that a hidden to the outside world, but prove to make these irons excellent performers.

The Callaway Apex Pro 21 Irons were designed with AI technology by created a flash cup face which is similar to driver face tech, but applied to an iron head.  These mean the face has variable thickness to maximize energy transfer from club to ball.  While the head is very compact, it is actually hollow.  This allows Callaway to use face tech like this in an iron, but still offer a forged feel with the 1025 steel body which is very soft and solid feeling at impact.  The face tech is legit, I’ve been extremely impressed with my irons play and stats with these in the bag.  They have offered my best “strokes gained” results of any iron set I’ve had in my bag.

I ranked the non-pro version of these irons as one of the best irons for mid handicappers, check out the full article for more.

The Callaway Apex Pro 21 irons mention tungsten on the back since there is a large (at least 90 gram) bar of tungsten in every iron head.  This is some heavy metal inside the head which helps lower cg, increase launch, and improve forgiveness.  They call it a Tungsten Energy Core which helps dial in each iron to its precise needs.   Not every club needs to launch sky high, but finding the right progression and use of tungsten from a 4-iron down to a PW is exactly what Callaway mastered in these irons.

The Callaway Apex Pro 21 Irons are impressive tools on the golf course.  They hit the ball high, straight and have just a little boost of distance.  They are 1/2 to 3/4 of a club longer while hitting higher than most other irons.  These really do take your iron game to new heights.  You shots will tower into the air while landing softly and often a little longer than expected.  As I’ve been tracking my stats, I find myself past the pin more often than short.   I wasn’t flying over the greens or anything crazy, but did have to think in terms of an extra 5 to 7 yards per club.  I didn’t feel like I had to work to gain anything either, it came very naturally swing after swing.  The True Temper Elevate Shafts with Tour VSS are also a great pairing with these heads for increased launch, but yet amazing feel.  Shots are very easy to control with this combo.

The most impressive part of the Callaway Apex Pro Irons is their accuracy.  They just hit into a small circle shot after shot.  This consistency and accuracy work hand in hand very nicely on the course.  It is great being able to hit a 4-iron with confidence just like hitting a 9-iron.   I found that I pretty much had the same accuracy with every club in the bag.    Yes, naturally the circle gets smaller the shorter the iron, but not as dramatic as some iron sets.  This is what really took my iron game to new heights.  I was hitting greens with every iron in the game and giving myself good looks at birdies on most holes.

Summary

I know not everyone can swap out their irons on a regular basis and many golfer don’t even want to; but if your irons are holding back your game, the Callaway Apex Pro Irons 2021 should get a serious look.  You will really like the feel and the looks, but you will fall in love with the performance and they take your game to new heights.  They launch it high, they are very forgiving, and have amazing accuracy.  You will see your scores improve as you strive to reach the apex of your iron game.
