BUNKER MENTALITY Style Matters

When the golf apparel space transitioned from 100% cotton polos packed with tan lines past your elbows, the adoption of polyester and shorter sleeves was a rather smooth and welcomed transition.  If I remember correctly, it was nowhere near the debate of leaving the flagstick in or out.  Especially in the warm and humid climates, people embraced the notion of not wearing a sponge.  Since the birth of tech fabric in the game, there has been a slow and steady evolution of modern soft lines in golf.

Walking the floor of the PGA Show, it is clear that golf apparel brands offer a variety of fabrics and styles to complement the personality of your golf wardrobe.  Whether you’re looking for tech fabric, blends, athleisure, or lifestyle pieces that work both on the course or in the office, it’s fairly easy to define your style personalty in the game.

The United Kingdom based, Bunker Mentality is a brand that has this depth to their apparel.  However, they offer something that separates great brands from the rest of the pack.  If they did not place identifiable branding or logo’s on their pieces, you still would be able to identify their apparel as a Bunker Mentality piece. Their style defines their brand.  From the next fairway, Bunker Mentality is easily distinguishable without seeing the logo.  For this reason, they have become one of my favorite brands in the game.  Bunker Mentality sets you apart from other members at your club before you arrive at the first tee.  As a guy that can go hard left or high right at a moments notice, I appreciate other ways to up my game, even if it is in the closet.

The signatures that make up the Bunker Mentality are their bold color flashes, thoughtfully placed and accents that define their brand, and logos where you least expect them, yet remain classy.  Another signature of Bunker Mentality is their fit.  Even among the same apparel lines in golf, fit will vary from one style to another.  Bunker Mentality remains constant in their fit and sizing season after season.  Once you have your size down, you can feel confident in future orders.  Their sizing is about one full size smaller than standard American sizing in the same size.  Even further, when you go up an entire size to match the American equivalent (if there is such a thing) it is still a tailor fit in that size.  For example, if you wear a size medium in most American brands, you’ll want to go up to a large in Bunker Mentality.  That size large will fit like a tailor fit (not slim fit) large.  As such, it’s important to note how they measure when selecting your apparel.

In my opinion, the best way to present apparel in a publication or editorial is to have an individual dressed in a complete outfit.  As a site, iGolfReviews presents apparel in the form of a “Look Book.”  One of my favourite (British spelling at no charge) aspects of the Bunker Mentality website is their “Game Day Looks” section where they present about 80 different outfits from their line.  When you click on the particular outfit, it is designed so you can select sizes from each piece and place them into your cart.  It is simply an ingenious way to purchase clothes and is a personal style assistant at your fingertips.

This past winter, I had the opportunity to take a look at some selections from Bunker Mentality.  One of my unexpected favorites was the Kuba Golf Wind Jacket.  This is a three layer jacket that has a water resistant outer layer, wind resistant thermal lining, and 360 degree stretch fabric.  It is a warm, intelligently designed jacket that is functional for golf.  The Cmax Frank Polo is infused with Polygiene technology.  Polygiene is a Swiss company that infuses their product into textiles to prevent the growth of odor causing bacteria at their source.  The long 5-button placket, button down collar and stretch fabric add to the classically refined style that Bunker is known for.

Bunker Mentality has been pushing the style limits for players for the past 14 years.  They now have distribution in the United States, green grass accounts, as well as digital distribution.  From all reports, they’re off to a fantastic start to 2019.  If you want to expand your golf and leisure wardrobe, Bunker Mentality is a great place to start.  They remain one of my favorite brands in the game.
